The Maori tattoo art consist of cured shapes and spirals in patterns. The patterns follow the curves of the body. Most often were the face tattooed, but also the buttocks and the legs of the Maori men. The women got tattooed on the lips and chin, sometimes the neck and the back. When Maori women had a chin tattoo it meant she was married.
To have a tattoo you showed strength and status, those without a tattoo were considered without status or worth.

If you are not a Maori, it is not OK for you to take a Maori tattoo, this will be seen as lack of respect and insulting for the Maori.

The legend about how the Maori started tattooing sounds something like this; once there was a young warrior, who fell in love with the princess of the underworld. She also fell in love with him, and they got married. The young warrior started mistreating her, and she went back to her father in the underworld. The young warrior felt guilty and wanted the princess back, so he went to the underworld to win her back, and he succeeded. The father of the princess taught him the tattoo art of the Maori tribe, and he brought this back to the surface.
Since then it has been a tradition for the Maori to have or get tattooed.
